Every year high school baseball starts about mid March, kind of. Before basketball season is even over the baseball season schedule has been made and can usually be found somewhere. Each school has a different way of putting the schedule out there. Granted in the last few years with schools adapting social media it’s been easier to find schedules but depending on who’s running the social media you never know how accurate it is. In Missouri I usually start with the MSHSAA.org and then double check with school calendars. After that I watch for social media posts. Even then it seems like a schedule slipped by and it last second we make a run for the baseball diamond. Oh by the way where does the team play? A lot of the times the addresses given for location is the address for the high school. Granted a lot more schools have baseball diamonds at the school but the majority of them still play at the local city parks.
Whether or not you can find the location the weather is the biggest factor. Most schools schedule about 25 games for the season. Usually they get in 18 games 20 if they’re lucky. Most of the cancellations and reschedules happen late March and early April because of the weather. For the 2022 season we were going to be at five different games and I’ve only made it to one because of the weather. If there’s a silver lining in the silver clouds you could say the earlier reschedules usually get scheduled after daylight savings time which happens about a week after the baseball season starts.
After daylight savings the games can usually start at 5 o’clock which gives them enough time to play at least one varsity game. Most most schools still stay with the 4:30 PM start which makes it difficult for parents and fans to get to the games. Of course baseball isn’t the only spring sport that suffers from time changes and weather track, soccer, tennis and golf are all sports that are played in spring but usually have scheduling problems. All in all with all the headaches that come with spring sports we all enjoy getting out there after a long winter cooped up in the cold!
